This is an awesome read for anyone who has known Charlie, or anyone who has known Midwestern Catholics, or anyone who has struggled with their faith. You will read and re-read many passages, and you will feel the authenticity of it. Charlie does not spare himself at all in this book. He tells it like it was for him, warts and all. I am a huge fan of Charlie, but I would not say any of this if it were not true…if the book sucked I would have remained silent and placated him by saying I’d do a review when I had the time. You will find meaning and significance in this book because you will hear the story of an interesting life and may hear many things that resonate in your own. 

This is a fascinating read. Charlie has a fantastic perspective on the Catholic Church and on people in general. Very honest and direct about the pros and cons. Great read of an exciting, interesting life story.

I’ve known Chuck for over 10 years, and reading his book felt like sitting down with an old friend who isn’t afraid to go deep, make you laugh, and challenge your thinking—all in one conversation. Charlie Schutt has written an honest and forthright account of his life as a man and as a Catholic priest. He confronts issues directly, pulls no punches, and gives readers excellent insight into the joys and sacrifices of the priesthood. Schutt’s style may be casual and sometimes irreverent, but beneath his glib tone lies a man who has wrestled with the issues. I recommend this book for its insight into human nature…….

Charlie Schutt would make Niccolo Machiavelli nervous. He is an ecclesiastical Dennis the Menace, a priest who can  make his bishop lunge for his crozier and start swinging it in circles, lest Charlie get any closer.  Charlie Schutt is also a spellbinding homilist. He can make the Scriptures dance. He is a gifted....priest who knows how to work the curb after Mass. People call ....to ask when Charlie will be on for Mass. Engaged couples ask for him to do their nuptials...... He has a touch. Charlie Schutt may make his superiors nervous but his parishioners love him....Schutt has left a succession of pastors searching for a cincture with which to garrote him....Charlie is the ecclesiastical equivalent of the Spanish 'picaro' - the likable rogue.  Even his superiors like him, though, at times, they would like to throttle him

As someone who has known and admired you in both careers, I am eager to read the book and listen to your podcast. Please, please, please add a speaking tour! Those who haven’t heard you speak to a large audience must experience your incredible gift - the ability to reach individuals in a crowd with a meaningful and relatable story along with a spirited delivery filled with exceptional style! This is a great read for any and all….. Charlie’s journey tells the story of “people I know,” even though I don’t know those specific people. We worked together at Lucas Group, and I knew some of his story, but the “before and after” was truly interesting and enlightening. This is a relatively short read, not only because it is brief and to the point (which it is), but because it is entertaining. If you ever have an opportunity to see Charlie speak, don’t hesitate! He is captivating!

Believe me, to have filled the church with over 1000 people these nights and to have earned the respect and admiration which everyone is voicing – you have accomplished no small task…..you make it meaningful….you make it real
